History of the School
The original St. Peter’s Church of England Primary was built at the top of the hill in Brotton in 1868 and since then two later schools have been built. The first is now used as the St Margaret’s Church Centre, the second being our existing building on the west side of Brotton adjacent to Saltburn Gill, with access to the beach through the woods, which surround the school field on its west side. The present school was opened in 1972 when the school was part of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Since then it has been part of the former Cleveland County and is now within Redcar and Cleveland Unitary Borough, which itself is still within Yorkshire.
The main extensions and developments have seen the opening of the Sports and Arts Hall in 2003 and the Sure Start Children’s Centre in 2006. Through these developments the school has run an Extended Day for the benefit of the pupils from 8am until 6pm on all school days, the day beginning at 8am with the Breakfast Club available for all pupils. At the end of the normal school day the Extended school activities begin at 3:30pm until 6pm. These are planned for all Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils and are managed by the school’s Extended Day Activities Coordinator.
St. Peter’s Church of England Primary has achieved numerous awards over the years for its work with local, regional and national organisations. These awards reflect the school successful involvement across a range of areas of school life, particularly P.E. and Sport and environmental education. In recent years the school has achieved Investors in People Status, Active mark Gold for its commitment to P.E. and Sport, Green Flag ECO Status Award, Healthy School Status, F.A. Chartermark School, Leading Aspects for the Extended Day provision, as well as for developing a school travel plan.
