Governors

The Governing Body is the appropriate authority of the school. It is a group of local people who are nominated, appointed or sponsored by various groups who are stakeholders in the school.

St Peter’s Governing Body has:

Foundation Governors
Nominated by St Margaret’s Church- as it was the Church that originally set up the school over a hundred years ago

Parent Governors
Nominated and appointed by parents, and these form the largest number of Governors

Staff Governors
Nominated and voted for by the staff of the school

Local Authority Governors
Appointed by the Local Authority

Community Governors
Nominated and co-opted by the other Governors of the School.

At St Peter’s the Head teacher is also a Governor. The Governing Body has a number of statutory powers and responsibilities and it must ensure that certain procedures are followed and that important events take place. It is responsible for things like the sound financial management of the school, ensuring that the national curriculum is followed, that targets are set and for the appointment of staff. Governors work closely with the Head and senior staff to determine the strategic direction the school will follow. It is not responsible for the day to day management of the school and this is delegated to the Headteacher and staff.A good way to sum up what Governors do is to think of them as a critical friend !

St Peter’s Governors are pro-active and work very closely with the Headteacher & staff. Governors offer support and help in a number of ways over and above their legal responsibility. This has involved things like coming into classrooms to work alongside pupils, helping at events, offering support on school visits, working with the schools Eco team to obtain Green Flag Status and helping to develop the schools Gifted & Talented Programme. A number of Governors also take a close personal interest and monitor on behalf of all Governors certain areas of school life like Numeracy, Literacy, and Special Educational Needs, in fact all aspects of life in the school.
