Music Curriculum

Music is an integral part of life at our school.  At St. Peter’s we aim to make the learning of music an enjoyable experience.  We inspire children to develop a love of music and singing, and encourage them to participate in a variety of musical experiences.  Music is also used as a tool to teach across a range of subjects.  We aim to build up the confidence of all children.  We use music to support our children’s emotional well-being by creating a sense of belonging through our musical gatherings.  Music unites our school as we sing together in collective worship and on special occasions such as Harvest, Easter, Christmas, St. Peter’s Day and whole school music days.  We also organise events outside of the school day that allows children to share their musical skills in the wider community.  Our school choir makes numerous visits to local nursing homes and at church events.  It is important that children see the happiness they spread to others through their performances.

Every child is given opportunities to sing, perform and play musical instruments.  They are given opportunities to listen to music, compose, improvise and are taught the correct musical terminology and notation.  We want children to be reflective and expressive and to develop their own appreciation of music.  We use the scheme of work ‘Charanga’ as our main resource to deliver the music curriculum.  The scheme ensures we are fulfilling the aims of the National Curriculum and has built in progression.  We also have many enhancements to this scheme through the support of the Tees Valley Music Service and a violin teacher who teaches all Year 5 children to play the violin over a whole year.
