Children at St Peter’s CE Primary School in Brotton have been putting their culinary creativity to the test as part of a Pie Designing Competition to mark Great British Pie Week 2026.

Pupils aged four to eleven were challenged to invent their own savoury pie recipes in celebration of one of Britain’s best-loved food traditions. From hearty classics to bold new flavour combinations, the entries demonstrated imagination and a strong understanding of complementary ingredients.

Eight finalists have now been shortlisted, with standout creations including Pheasant and Wild Berries, Ham, Egg and Melted Cheese, Chicken and Coconut Curry, and Chicken, Sweet Potato, Carrot and Plum.

The overall winner will be selected by Goodswen Butchers of Redcar. The winning pie will then be handmade by the butchers and offered for sale to the public, giving one pupil the opportunity to see their recipe brought to life.

Goodswen Butchers previously supported the school in 2025 during Great British Sausage Week, when pupils took part in a sausage designing competition. The continued partnership has strengthened links between the school and the local business community.

The initiative has provided children with insight into food design and local food production, while reinforcing the importance of supporting independent businesses within the community.

As part of the project, pupils also learned about the history and cultural significance of the British pie, exploring why it remains a staple on menus across the country.

Mr Woodhouse, Headteacher at St Peter’s CE Primary School, said:
“It is so important to celebrate our British traditions. The children have thoroughly enjoyed designing their savoury pies and the creativity has been outstanding. We are very grateful to Goodswen Butchers for supporting us once again and for giving our pupils this opportunity. Supporting our local shops is something we value greatly.”

Excitement is now building across the school as pupils await the announcement of the Pie Champion 2026.
